SITUATION/PROBLEM
DHL Express (Deutsche Post World Net) as a global company employing people all over the world wanted to make better use of the employees' potential and involve them in creating better solutions for the company's operation in every area.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION/SOLUTION
Idea Management is the model of management which makes all the employees participate in the process of creating New values and solutions in the company. Employees present their proposals to their superiors. They do it individually through special forms destined to report ideas or through the internel information network of the company (intranet). The superior evaluates proposals as part of his job description. In the case when proposal exceeds the scope of job of a superior than an export makes a decision on implementing the proposed idea. The preson reporting such idea puts it it in one of the two categories: "Proposal of significant importance" if there is a possibility of measurement  of financial benefits or time - saving in the company ; or"Proposal of lower importance"  -  if there is no possibility of taking measurement.  Managers  motivate  their employees to create solutions concerning on - going improvements and innovations. They should also support their employees when their idea is put to test in life.

Effectiveness of this system is measured by monitoring:

  • number of proposals;
  • rate of employees' involvement: the number of people reporting such proposals 100;
  • rates of cost effectiveness: proportion of financial value of proposals to costs of  managing ideas in the organization;
  • implementations: relationship of all the submitted proposals to the number of those implemented;
  • processing time: average time needed to adopt a decision about implementation or rejection of a submitted idea.

  • Development of cooperation between managers and employees of a lower level;
  • Synergy - skliful use of specialised knowledge and practical experience of employees.

  • Proper trainind and motivating of managers.

WORTH REMEMBERING:

  • Effective management of such program requires involvement of all managerial levels;
  • Procedure of managing new ideas should be transparent and simple -  otherwise it discourages its employees;
  • It is indispensable to assess proposals within the assumed period of time;
  • Such a big project requires having structure of people who are delegated to manage ideas;
  • Permament and varied communication regarding rules and continual need to have new ideas submitted by employees.
