To address the challenges facing this continent and South and southern Africa in particular - and to raise the tourism and hospitality industry’s awareness of their environmental impacts, a national conference on environmental management in tourism (EMiT) will be held at the Wild Coast Sun in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa in June 2007.

The Wild Coast Sun, southern Africa’s most environmentally responsible resort and winner of the overall IMVELO 2005 and 2006 Award for environmental stewardship in Tourism, has been selected for its wide range of activities, facilities and operational apsects to allow delegates the opportunity to experience first-hand, the potential that sound environmental management practice can have on the environment. Located along perhaps one of the most sensitive stretches of the South African coastline, the Wild Coast Sun has established effective and sustainable environmental management standards that have considerably reduced the impacts that this property has on its environment, local community and the cultural heritage of the area.

The conference has been themed ‘Touch Africa Lightly' and it aims to address the growing impacts of tourism on local communities, the natural environment and the cultural heritage of this continent through a programme of interactive presentations, papers and workshops. EMiT 2007 hopes to attract tourism, hospitality and leisure planners, business owners, operators and organisations from across Africa and delegates will be provided with a unique opportunity to learn from some of the world’s most successful destinations, companies and environmental organisations about how the benefits that can accrue from mass tourism can be harnessed to the benefit of the host destination and its community.

The Conference will begin on June 5th, World Environment Day 2007 and for the next three days, a range of international and local speakers will share their experiences with delegates in a programme that has been designed to accommodate almost every aspect of environmental sustainability and responsibility in tourism today.
